At the beginning of 2024, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) ended its largest food aid program in refugee camps. Even before the food aid cut, countless families in refugee camps were struggling with food insecurity due to war and displacement. Now, the situation is even more dire.

The crisis in Refugee Camps deepens

Millions of Refugees were already facing food insecurity due to war and displacement. Then, a devastating blow: The UN World Food Programme (WFP) ended its largest food aid program in refugee camps at the beginning of 2024. This equates to over $650 million of aid being pulled out from the people who need it most.

With almost 13 million people are food insecure in refugee camps and almost 2 million are at risk of being food insecure, this massive food aid cuts has deepened the crisis in refugee camps. Food insecurity has become even more critical than it ever was, with countless innocent people struggling to survive.

Rising of risks of malnutrition and disease

Food insecurity adversely affects human health, increasing the risk of malnutrition and disease.

Aula Abbara, co-chair of the Public Health Network, has warned that the cutting of WFP’s funding “will have profound effects across the country”.

 Public Health Network has already reported that that rates of severe acute malnutrition among children aged 6–59 months has risen by almost 50% between 2021 and 2022. “This [the of WFP’s funding] increases their risk of infectious diseases including cholera—something which remains widespread in refugee camps—and measles among other infections”, Abbara noted.

Thus the message is clear. We must do whatever we can to help our brothers and sisters in refugee camps get the food aid they desperately need to survive.

About Emergency Response Association

The Emergency Response Society was established in 2019 through a youth team with various experiences in refugee camps. Its idea began with campaigns to evacuate civilians from safe areas from bombing until the ambition to serve our people increased after the increase in the amount of suffering, forced displacement, and the large number of camp residents, so it was necessary to expand to include many. It is one of the projects that relieves their pain, as it now includes more than 100 employees distributed between refugee camps and Turkey, with different experiences.

The association works mainly in Refugee Camps, specifically the city of Idlib and its countryside, the countryside of Latakia, and the northern countryside of Aleppo, in addition to the Turkish state of Gaziantep. It works temporarily in the regions of neighboring countries during crises, such as Jordan, Palestine, and Lebanon.
